SECRETARY'S REPORT 2008-9

Here we are et start o oor 70th anniversary year, aye that's reet t' society hez been ga'an fer three scooer 'ear an' ten.

We hed t' AGM was et Hackthrup, es we gen'rlly deuh, raither less fwolk then normal just ower thurty. Ted telt us hoo t' 1973 AGM was held et t' Abbotsford Hotel i' Peereth, and there was 93 members theer! T' 'ear efter, t' AGM was held et Lowther, and hez bin ivver since. We follered business meeting wid a Members' Day.

We hed sum gud entries fer t' Young Farmers Club dialect competitions, and t' winners war published in t' Journal. T Field days war et Santon Brig nar Gosforth, wid Tommy Coulthard, Ken and Mary Jordan fer judges; and et Millom where Keith Coates, Jennifer Jewell and misel judged. T' competitions this time er ganna be et Oulton nar Wigton an' Levens, sea we leuk forrat te encouraging young fwolk te use oor mak o' tawk.

It was oor dialect service i' June, et St Mary's kurk i1 Windermer' we hed theme o' 'Watter'. It was conducted bi Revd Brian Pedder, and lessons war read bi Keith Coates and Tommy Coulthard. Recitations war bi Bruce Wilson, Robbie Ellis, Annie Mawson, Jennifer Jewell an' mesel.

We went te Crosby Ravensworth fer oor September meetin' when Ken Jordan gev a tawk aboot Corn Mills.

T' back end meetin' was et Ireby, there was a gud turn oot, sea efter t' lunch we fair enjoyed slides by Maurice Steele 'In Search of Wild Orchids in Cumbria.' T' picters o' them bonny flooers fair breetened up a winter day.

This March we went te Soulby nar Kirkby Stephen, but sum folk hed a bit ov a job finden t' spot. We'd decided te hev lunch afoor t' spring meetin anaw, sea we aw tucked in than settled doon fer a grand session wid Len Hayton. Len hed handed oot sheets wid dialect phrases an' words fer folk te fill in. He then telt a few tales and recited his awn poems, sum war reel funny sea we hed a gud laugh. T' word lists war checked an ther was prizes fer t' winners.

We have lost some valued members over the past year; Mrs Sarah Holmes, Workington, the wife of our Treasurer John; Mrs Rene Roberts, Penrith, whea was varra weel kent wid her beuks and tales i' dialect; Mrs Evelyn Metcalfe. Appleby - the last of our founder members, she published a beuk er twa and often hed tales i' t? Journal; Mr Lancaster, Bigrigg, Mrs G Bowness, Carlisle, Mrs S. A. Johnston, Wigton and John Bayliffe of Snap.

We're varra gratefu1 te ivveryboddy et gi'es a hand et meetin's, them et sees te t' teas and weshin up, sellen raffle tickets, an keepin' an eye on t' stall. T' brass fra t' raffle an' stall gen'rally mek eneuf te pay fer t' ha' we use, sea er varra important. Sum o't' reg'lers whea see te these jobs hev a struggle to mannish, er can't git te t' meeting' sea please can we hev yan er twea mair folk te gie' a nan' wid these jobs, nut ivvery time, then it's nut aw doon te t' seame few fwolk. -enny on ye'll deuh!
